Hey everyone! I just discovered coolant on my passenger side floor so there went the heater core! What's the easiest way to change it out on this car? Can it be done from the inside? Thanks in advance for any help!

From a GTO forum site: 66 GTO heater core replacement

I agree about the heater core, but, you do not have to remove the firewall side of the heater housing to change the heater core, less then 2 hours from the inside and it's done. Remove the the inner housing from under the dash (first remove the glove box for easier access), disconnect the heater control cables, and all nuts and bolts keeping it in place, it's pretty easy to change the heater core from inside. Now, if you need to change the heater blower motor, then yes, you have to go from the engine compartment side. I've changed the heater core on both '66 and '67 GTOs from inside. Last time I did this was in PA on Kevin Douds '66, it took the two of us less than 2 hours with a beer/lunch break somewhere in the middle ;-) A heater core change is something that can easily be done at ..... let's say a group maintenance day like those that Denny D set up. Oh ya, and by removing the inner housing you can clean it all out really nice :-)

From the engine compartment you can also but you have to drill a 1" hole in the inner fender well ( that most people don't want to do) to get the last bolt out. Read here: http://www.gtoforum.com/f50/heater-core-replacement-1966-gto-22733/

Thanks for getting me that info, Doug! I jumped into it last night and found that the previous owner already drilled a hole in the fender well to access the final nut in the fan housing portion on the heater box. They left the nut off the stud so I only had to unscrew the remaining nuts and those were easily accessible. So the studs go from the inside of the car out. You have to unscrew them from under the hood. Anyway, man, that thing left a huge mess on my carpet and floor pan. All the seals are bad too. Oh well. Back to Opgi.com!

Good luck on this, and yes it is a PITA! Just be glad your car doesn't have A/C! That makes it even worse!
