Heating/ac control cluster lights out

Has anyone any experience with the heater control cluster background lights ?I have an 2003 Montana with the outside lights out on both sides out but the inside are lit fine I was told by the dealer/parts dep that this is an unserviceable part and that the whole unit needs replaced $$$$$ . I was just going to live with it but it does bother me sometimes.I'm guessing that there is leds behind there soldered to some board ???
 
You CAN use a #2162 bulb, but it`s a bit of work but not impossible. I have done a few of these including my `02 Montana. They are NOT LED`s...at least not the ones in mine. The bulbs have red caps on them that have to be gently removed and placed on the new bulbs once they are soldered.
