I recently came across and acquired a 1966 LeMans. It’s a bit unique in that it has the factory 326 HO, 4-speed, no console, Saf-T-Trak, manual steering and brakes, and rallye performance dash gauges with tach. Sort of a baby GTO wannabe. I bought it for a project this winter. It’s a legit solid survivor that should be a really nice car after I put who-knows-how-many hours of wrenching and polishing in it.

My question: one of the first things I will be doing is replacing the original distributor with HEI. I’ve never done this on a car with a factory tach. Can anyone tell me where it gets its signal, and what if anything I need to consider in order for it to function with HEI? I looked in the 1966 Tempest shop manual but didn’t see the answer.

TIA!

Did you look at the negative post of the original ignition coil?
How many wires?
Why HEI?
Keep the original distributor and install a Pertronix points eliminator and aftermarket coil.

Do tell me more, I’m not knowledgeable about that as an option.
Look at the link

Thanks for the help with my continuing education, guys. I’ve worked on and installed HEI and Ford DuraSpark. I ordered a Pertronix Ignitor III kit and coil from Summit this morning and am looking forward to playing with it!
