Soooo after not baggin and taggin, a bout with cancer and I finally have er close to firing up BUT...... I forget which wire goes to the battery and which is the tach on the HEI cap, theres a fat one and a skinny one. which is which?

Are you saying the connectors are the same?
Heavy, probably red, is battery.
You can also use a voltmeter to see which one is hot with key in run position.

On my 79, the connectors differ and cannot be crossed. White connector with heavy formerly white but now light brown wire attaches to battery terminal to the right. Brown connector with thin brown wire attaches to the tach terminal to the left. Mine cannot be installed incorrectly. See photos

So, I'm getting power and the starter is good. I'm told it's the neutral safety switch, where is it located?

Your original question was about the distributor connection.
You now seem to have a new issue and I assume the starter doesn't engage when you turn the key?
I also assume a automatic transmission?
If so, on the steering column.
