Hello,

My name is Mary and I am having an issue Im hoping someone else has had and can help me fix. I have a 2006 Grand prix GT v6 the display panel has started working only occasionally. when I put the key in everything lights up like its supposed to but once I start the car the radio, information display (mileage etc) and the main dash do not light or if they do, dont stay lit. I have had it to the shop where they ran a diagnostics check and it came up with a code of U1000 some kind of communications error code. Can anyone tell me where the communication is going wrong? Is there something specific that I can fix without having to pay for trial and error. I really dont want to have to take it to the dealership because it is so expensive but I was told it could be thousands of things. They have checked all the fuses and said they are all fine. Thanks in advance

U1000 is loss of communication of class 2 devices. I would hazard a guess it's a bad connection at the BCM since it controls the instrument panel.

And this BCM is it in the dash somewhere or is it even something that a regular person could tackle? it is just so odd I have both blinker lights I have my air bag light and the seat belt light but its like I just dont have the "backlight" for the dashboard.

You have to take it to a repair shop that does more than just check fuses. If they were able to come up with the code how come they didnt know the cause? A competent shop should be able to test the BCM for you rather than guessing. The part at www.gmpartsdirect.com is about $157.

Double check that you haven't accidentally turned the IP lights down on the dimmer control. If not, you might have a bad dimmer module. But, as stated above, your shop should have been able to troubleshoot this for you more.

Well Firestone said that it was an electrical issue most likely and that they did not do that kind of work that it would be better to take it to the dealership

Glad that worked out. Nothing like a free fix!:)

thats for sure but I am wondering would that have cause that U1000 code to come up? I mean its all working but what about the code.. hmmmmm

Back to the code, I still think you need to have someone look at the BCM (usually behind a panel under the glove box). A lot of times a bit of oxidation/corrosion builds up in the connector pins and causes some of those issues. Any good general repair shop should be able to check this and clean the connectors if you don't feel comfortable doing it.

I will do that, I sure am glad that the dimmer was just turned down for now anyway, they lit up when I got in the car to drive home and stayed lit the entire way I am so pleased.

well took the car to the dealership it seem that the U1000 code is because of the passenger air bag/seat belt notifier, If someone sits there and then gets out the light and bell still goes off thinking someone is sitting there because the seat belt isnt hooked. but when you turn the car off it resets itself.

So the dash really was the dimmer switch and I know what the code was for.

Good to know you have it solved.
