Just recently when I started my car, i noticed that while in park the steering wheel would not turn unless strong armed. When it is turned, it makes a VERY loud scraping sound even in Park. Especially while driving at slow speeds or Idle. Seems to loosen up a bit when you gas it, and the sound isn't as bad either once it warms up. It is 17 degrees here, So I try to let it warm up before driving it. I replaced the Power Steering fluid, it was low, but not dry. Seemed to fix the car for about 20 minutes, then today symptoms were back. No shaking or wobbling while driving, no sounds while driving strait, or over 5mph. Once I'm stopped or turn w/o substantial gas..sounds bad. Wheel seems even more tight today, afraid to drive it! Feel like my tires may fall off ! Haha -
Fluid from yesterday hasnt seemed to go down any, doesn't seem to be a leak..
The problem is when i research this, I get a wide array of possible causes. Everyone thinks they know for sure its either the Axel, The power steering pump,The rack and pinion, The belt, The bearings, A defective steering rack or the U joint.. I have NO idea, and don't want to get 'taken' at the Garage Monday because I don't know anything about cars.
Can anyone shed some insight on this? All these issues are costly
