Recently my 2005 Grand Am started knocking very badly when it first started but as soon as it warmed up it would stop and coolant was disappearing. Also serpentine belt was squeaking. The car ran perfectly at this time. Mechanic replaced water pump (alleviated belt squeak), replaced lower intake manifold gasket, and all lifters. Afterwards he couldn't get to start again and after hours and hours he determined that there was some kind of short and had to replace cam sensor harness and IC module harness. (no idea what these are)
He tells me check engine light is now on and he said diagnostic indicates something wrong with cam shaft position sensor and possibly 24x crank sensor. At this point I'm out of money, however. He says it won't leave me stranded and he can fix it at another time when I have the funds.
So now the check engine light is on, the car now stalls anytime I stop, or sometimes when I'm slowing down. Usually it starts right back up but sometimes I have a problem getting it to start up again. The tachometer is jumpy, it goes up way high then drops and then the car dies. Also when tach jumps, it sort of sounds like its missing. When I accelerate sometimes its jumpy. Hard to explain but it jerks and acts like its not getting fuel.
I am just frustrated, because before I had it repaired it ran perfect and I'm wondering before I toss any more money into it or at that mechanic if its something he did or what could the problem be?
Any ideas?
