I have a 1968 Lemans that I inherited from my grandfather. He loved this car very much. After his death it sat in the Nevada heat for about 5 years before I could afford to have it I think I am going to change the engine and put a Chevy 350 crate motor in it. My concerns with this is I do not know if the mounts match up or what I would have to change. I would love some advise on which is the best motor to go with and the best place to buy them from. I am starting with the engine then will move to the inside then paint. Please give any advise you can.

Not sure why you dont want to stick with the Pontiac engine but you will need Chevy mounts and a transmission adaptor. You can try www.summitracing.com and www.jegs.com for engines based on power requirements and budget.

The pontiac engine runs fine it just has so many small issues and a big issue. The big issue is that you can put gas into the carb and start it and drive it. You park it and then go and try to start it again about 30 min later u have to dampness back in the carb. Not sure why it lets fuel drain back out. I put in a new fuel pump and sending unit. I want to keep the pontiac motor since its matching numbers but just not sure how to fix the fuel issue. I want to put a four barrel carb on to help with mileage and help with responce. I don't want to have a race car by any stretch just a good driver.

first of all you should not have to put gas into the carburetor to start it. So either the choke is not correctly adjusted or the carburetor needs an overhaul. If you intend to put a 4 bbl carb on then no reason to get what I assume is a 2bbl to work. It is a lot cheaper to put on a intake manifold and carburetor then to change the engine.

Do you know a good place to get original intakes? I was thinking if I kept the pontiac motor then it would be kinda nice to keep it as close to original as possible or do u think that it would be better to go with aftermarket? If so which is the best set up for the money? I don't have a huge budget.

Thanks Doug. What carb should I look into getting? I just want a good driver not a racer.

1968 number matching ones are out of reach moneywise even for a used one, so a new Jet brand Qjet or Edelbrock brand Qjet thru Summit Racing or Jegs is a best bet. This way its a "bolt on and go" type a deal.

About the same price as an autoparts store rebuilt one that usually have problems. ( about $300 for a new or rebuilt carb anyway you look at it )

Good prices for used early 70's to mid 70's Pontiac ones on Ebay now if on a budget , but they might need a overhaul.
