i have a problem, my cylinder head cracked and i just replaced it with a one from a junkyard and the bottom of it was machined and i put in new gaskets and bolts and torqued to specs and i finally put it back together and it sounds like it was misfiring, i bought new spark plugs and after i started the car for about five minutes i pulled out the spark plugs and they were black but it wiped off easily, does anyone have a theory why thats happening? is it burning something that it shouldn't be burning?

Thanks

also, i have a car scanner and it has a live data option and when the car idles the spark plug advance indicator goes from zero to 20 degrees (it used to stay at a constant 9 degrees before the head cracked) but when i press on the gas it stays at a constant 24 degrees, so what my question is what sensor controls the spark plug advancement?

Here is a tip. You will find that more people will respond if they knew the make, model, year, and engine size.

ohh sorry its a 2002 sunfire gt 2.2 ecotech engine

also if this helps i have a scanner with a live feature in it and as my car was idling everything seem right but there was something called spark plug advance and it was jumping from zero to 20 degrees, it seemed like the car was confused or something but when i gave it a little gas it stayed at a constant 24 degrees. i did read something that could cause the problem and people were calling it the idle air control valve but i couldn't seem to find it on my engine, so if someone knows where it is maybe that could be the problem. i also read that the black and sooty or dry stuff on my spark plug was happening because it was too rich or something but that is a main problem with carburetors but i have a throttle body and fuel injectors but this is all o know right now so if someone can give me some tips or suggestions that would help a lot.

isnt the computer throwing codes? what are they?

well it takes time for the computers to pick up problems from what i read the computer in the car checks the problem 1000 times before it displays a code but i did get one code, the random misfire code but i am assuming thats happening because the spark plus are black and they are not firing right. but what i am trying to do is i let the car idle and i sit and wait for the code to pop up so when i get a code i will let you know but i think that will take some time. sorry i couldn't give you more.

which sensor controls the short term fuel trim? im asking because my scanner is telling me that it is at -20% and people are saying thats too low, also i think i have a crack in my intake manifold, could that cause the sensor to screw up?
