I have a 98 Sunfire 2.2L (auto). I've noticed that when i start the car the idle is around 1000rpm and then drops to 500 rpm a few seconds later (Normally).

If i take the car for a drive and warm it up to normal temp, and place the car in "PARK" my idle will sometimes jump up to 2000 rpm and stay there. If i restart the car it will go back to normal (500-800 rpm).

Today the car had been doing this, and when i turned right at an intersection my car died altogether and i had to restart it. Any ideas?

IAC?

Thanks!

The IAC is a good place to start checking for the cause of the problem.

Just wanted to share my solution for anyone who may have this same issue in the future. Finally 2 days ago the check engine light came on, and i had it checked. It was the TPS sensor. I had bought a cheaper one last spring and it failed me. Do yourselves a favor and buy good quality sensors from Delco or NAPA.

The check engine light came on yesterday when the car started "clunking" into every gear as it shifted. When it was put into Park and then into drive it would clunk so bad it sounded like someone rear-ended me!

After installing the new TPS the car runs like a dream again.

Thanks for the input.
