I've owned my '03 Aztek for about two years now. It has just over 130,000 miles on it. Over the past year I've been experiencing high idle issues. Most of the time when I start it, it will idle high usually around 1500-2000 RPM's & sometimes even up to 3000 RPM's. Sometimes if it idles normal I could be driving then it starts going high again. If I start it up and it idles high, I could shut it off, start it back up and it be fine for a while. Could drive up to 65 MPH and not even have my foot touch the gas, constantly riding the brakes. Makes it feel like the transmission slips sometimes too. Over the last 9 months, I've changed the throttle position sensor & the air idle control valve and seemed like it helped, but after a couple days started back up again. I just changed the upstream oxygen sensor and still no change. Could it be a vacuum leak? Ready to take it to the shop, 'cause we are planning a 15 hour road trip in a few weeks
Any ideas??

Do you have a check engine light on? Was the TPS adjusted when it was installed?

The check engine light has came on once about two weeks ago. Stayed on for about a day. Which that was the first time it even has been on. The TPS was not adjusted. I was informed that before the wire connector was plugged in to turn the key on first, then plug it in and it would be set. I don't believe that was correct. What else should be done?

This link gives you a complete diagnostic procedure to test the TPS. If the check engine light comes on again take it to autozone and get the code read.
The code remains in memory even if the light goes out but not for an extended period of time.

I decided to take it to the local dealer and found out that the ECM needs to be replaced. Will be replacing it tomorrow.
Will see if that takes care of it.

markc40,
Thanks for the update on this. I am happy to hear that your dealer was able to assist you in getting this diagnosed for you. Please let me know how everything turns out for you. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me anytime.
Thank you,

Due to the cost of a new one, I did get a used one, same part number that is currently in it. I removed the battery, and replaced with the used ecm. My Aztek started when I turned the key on, didn't have to turn the key all the way like normal. It was running fine, but the service engine light was on & low fuel, non of the gauges were working and when I tried to put it into gear, the shifter wouldn't unlock.
Does the used ecm need to be reset or programmed to my vehicle? What would the cost be? I'm hoping the used ecm IS good & all it needs is to be reset.

I did find that the part number on mine, did have different lettering following the number. Mine is 12209614 YCXZ the one I purchased is 12209614 YCZP. Can the YCZP be programmed to fit, or should I try to get my money back?

Did you contact the party that supplied you with the ECM and explain your problem and the part number difference?

Not yet, but I was told by the dealer and a salvage place that also has one, that the it would need to be programmed to my vehicle. Even if I got one that was the exact same 12209614 YCXZ, that I current have in mine. That it needed to be programmed with the ven #.
The dealer said they would programm it, but there is no guarantees that it would work.

So I guess my question now is, can the 12209614 YCZP ECM, be programmed to my car that has the original 12209614 YCXZ ECM?
When I did hook it up & start it, the engine was running great, so I'm thinking that's a plus.

I would go by the basic part number which is the same and assuming the unit is good the dealer should be able to get it to match your VIN.

I've purchased a remanufactured ECM, after I installed it I had a local shop do the crankshaft position variation and transmission relearn and now it runs like a top.

Excellant, glad it worked out for you
