Hi, I have a 2001 sunfire sedan with the 2.2 engine. I am using 1 qt. to 1200 miles, is this excessive?? I am just over 100,000 miles now. I use 15w-40 oil in it. I live in Fla, so can get away with doing that. If it is excessive, any ideas?? The bottom of the engine is dry, no leaks. Also, valve cover is dry. Haven't tried the breather hose to see if plugged yet.

assuming you have no leaks that is just on the border of what GM would consider exceptable, 1qt/1,000 miles. You do have 100k on the car and if not the original owner would not know how well it was treated before purchase. They do have what they call high mileage oils in the auto parts stores. You may want to try one of those. When is the last time you changed the PCV valve, a bad one will cause excessive oil consumption. Your oil choice is also a little on the high side viscosity wise but that would not cause oil consumption.

No pcv on this engine, just a breather hose. My brother in law had it for my niece, before I bought it, he did all maintenance on it. I got it with 54000 miles. Change oil every 3 months. It's never been overheated, as far as I know. Just curious, I had a maxima with 173 k on it that I never had to add to. Thanks for the info.

These 2.2 engines are not known to burn oil, as I have 199,500 kms on my 2001 sunfire, which is approximately 125,000 miles. What i'd do first is switch to the factory spec oil which is 5W30 and see what happens after wards.

I think next oil change, I,ll go to the high mileage oil, and see what that does.

again I would be surprised if you get an answer on a 3 year old thread
