Hood Release Rod

The previous owner of my 1972 Lemans cut out the upper right hand side of the safari grill and rigged a coat hanger as the hood release rod. The rod was still behind the grill when I took it off today. It is a shorter rod though, not like the traditional GTO rod. This might not be the original rod I thought to myself due to the shortness of it. I ordered a new grill off ebay and snapped it in, but the rod was way to short, due to the grill covering the exposure of the rod. So I'm looking at an earlier GTO with endura bumper and noticing that it has a quite longer rod that sticks out under the valence panel. Is this how it is supposed to be on the Lemans too? If so would I be able to order a hood release rod for an earlier GTO? I was thinking of fabricating the current rod to make it long and just stick out the drivers side grill, but it just seems to obvious..? Any advice will help.

whether endura bumper or chrome the hood release rod is between the bottom of the bumper and the valence panel
