How can I remove the governor in my 1988 T/A

Ok so I JUST bought a 1988 Trans Am with a 5.7 litre 350 V8 in it, so naturally I found a long desolate stretch of road and punched it. Why did no one tell me it would cut off at 95 mph! I was ready to throw up, it made me so disgusted that this governor or rev limiter was in my car. So I would like to know how to remove it. An employee at Autozone said I can just take it out which I probably won't be attempting without further advice. So someone please help me with this problem before I am challenged to a race and have to back down. PLEASE!

In today's lawsuit happy world, I'm not sure anyone will tell you. Well on paper, so to speak.

Is the car "tight" enough to be going 95 MPH? Also it's not a good idea to be driving alone at that speed on "a long desolate stretch of road" If you lost control and wrecked it may be hours before help arrived.

Hey looks like I did help! You're here to post again instead of wrapped around a tree somewhere!

But seriously, I'm sure someone will explain how to do it. I think if they do it should through a PM and not posted for the masses.

Just a side note I belong to few tractor forums and guys are always asking how to disable the mow in reverse cut off.

A few weeks later there is a thread about someone's kid getting killed by a mower backing over him.

Didn't mean to imply that you or your T/A aren't up to holding your own at 95+ MPH but you never what can happen until it's too late.

Be careful and enjoy the new ride!

As far as I know you have to get the chip reflashed. The computer is programmed to cut fuel off at a certain point. I always thought it was 112mph. BTW they limit the top speed of the car because of tire ratings. If you have the 16X8 wheels the cutoff should be higher than 95.

There is no governor. The computer shuts fuel off at a predetermined speed/rpm. You have to reprogram the removeable chip in the computer. Go here: http://www.thirdgen.org/ They will tell you what you need to do.

Thank you

Hey thank you guys so much, youve been a great help. I'm sure nobody cares but I had to put a new engine in my t/a after i had it for a week...
I suppose I got shafted on the engine when i bought the car but that happens. It cost me $2500. Good news is that now I have a 1988 trans am with 0 miles on the 5.7 litre engine. ha HA! anyone know how much thatd be worth? Everything else is in exceptional condition; but thanks for the help again.

its doable

Hey, I have the same car, what happens is, from the factory, they govern the car to the tires "rated" speed, so some were at 112MPH, some at 95MPH, Im from canada where my governer is a pansy ass 180KPH, or about 77-79 MPH, I went and got a Hypertech chip, you can change the governer, shift points, speedo by tire size, fuel regulator, etc. Its only about 289$ canadian so about 220 american, takes about 5 mins to apply, plus you get a 2% fuel milege increase, and a 30% HP and torque increse.
