firebird?? my dad's a mechanic he'll do it he just needs to know the how to specifically for my car...

Just guessing, but probably a sealed-unit arrangement that bolts on/off. Suggest to scrounge up a shop manual - Chiltons, Haynes, Motor, GM, etc. - for specifics. If your dad is a mechanic, a shop manual is probably one of the best investments you can make to keep the car roadworthy.

The rearend in your firebird is a hotchkiss type semi floating type axle with roller bearings on the outer and inner fixed races ..
if your mechanic does not know this I would find another mechanic!
it is a standard type rear end that will require dissasembly of the rear cover removal of the retaining pin and "C" clips then the axle shafts can be removed and the seals and bearings removed from the axle case ...
the mechanic should determine before which bearings are actually bad as there are four two outer and two inner the inner being on the center section of the carrior ...
as said, if your mechanic is NOT used to working on this type of rear find someone who is ... it can be quite a Job to set up the gears if you have to dissasemble it to replace the inner bearings ...
