How do you charge the air conditioning system on a Pontiac Sunfire 2002?

My son has a Pontiac Sunfire 2002. Where he bought the car never gave him an owner's manual. Last year, my husband charged the air conditioning system by buying a few cans of coolant and doing it himself. This year, my son had the air conditioning system checked. They ran dye through it and checked for leaks, and recharged it. After 2 months, the air stopped working. He took it back, they checked it, and charged it again. This week, it stopped working again, only blows out a little cool air. He is taking it back to the shop this week, but it is going to be in the 90's for a few days, and he thought he might charge the air himself like his Dad used to. Unfortunately, my husband died earlier this year, and my son doesn't know how to charge it himself. Can anyone tell us how he can do this? And can anyone possibly have any ideas as to why his air isn't working, even though the car repair place says there is no leak in his system? Thanks so much!

Suggest if recharging is necessary every couple of months - there's a leak.

If one has to ask how to recharge, first reaction is to recommend taking it to a shop due to the hazards around handling refrigerant. Based on your experiences with the shop, suggest to find a different one.

If you're persistant, recommend to get a charging kit at the local parts shop - recommend to get a kit with a gauge. Your model will use R-134, so there is limited chance of connecting to the wrong port. There are two similar ports of different sizes, hook up to the one that matches the charger fitting. With the A/C on full high, charge until the pressure reaches about 40-45 psi. WEAR EYE AND HAND PROTECTION to reduce chance of personal injury.
