...without special tools involved? We are trying to replace the water pump and we cannot get the crankshaft pulley off. Any ideas? We are trying not to turn the motor over. How do you get it off without moving the whole pulley?
It's not the crankshaft sensor. We are actually trying to get the entire pulley off so that we can replace the water pump. When we try to loosen the bolt, the pulley will move. How do you stop the pulley from moving? is there a special tool for that?

There's probably a special tool that locks the flywheel in place. It would bolt to the block and have a tooth that engages the flywheel gear. Otherwise you would have to apply enough reverse torque to the flywheel to keep the engine from turning as you loosen the pulley bolt.

yep you NEED a puller, trying to smash it off will hurt the crankshaft.

might be able to rent one
