Sunbird LE?
I know where the starter is, but it seems impossible to get at. If anyone has replaced one of these before on this model car, what is the best way to get at it? Do you need to remove the intake manifold to get to it or what is the best approach ?

It's best to refer to a manual, but it will probably say something like this:
1. Park car
2. Set parking Brake
3. Disconnect Battery (Important, that one)
4. Locate Starter
5. Make a drawing of the wires on the Starter (also important)
6. Disconnect Wires
7. Remove bolts holding starter in (usually only 2 or 3)
8. Remove Starter
9. Install new Starter
10. Put in Starter Bolts
11. Hook up Wires (Refer to Drawing)
12. Reconnect Battery
13. Start Car

My bad, didn't read the rest of the Q.
Never heard of pulling an intake on those, I've done a Celebrity which is pretty similar, you just end up squishing your hand in there & swearing a lot. A Haynes manual would tell you for sure, only $15 at Autozone & worth it. I'd spring for mechanic's gloves, you'll end up cutting the crap out of your hands if not.

pontiac sunbird starter

if you remove the alternater and powerstering pump and set aside you should have enough room to reach under back intake nd top engine to remove starter

Wrong................ why are you bringing up old 8 year posts ( 2 of them now) with the wrong answer?

The starter is nowhere near the alternator on either motor.

Doug in P.R.
