I have a 2000 Firebird, automatic 6 cyl.
How do I go about checking to see if there is enough fluid in the radiator or if there is the correct amount? It is winter and I live in the northern East Coast, in the U.S.

You have a reservoir jug on that car as well as a radiator, now before taking off the radiator cap and looking into the radiator at the level which it should always be full, you can eyeball the reservoir jug it will have two lines one that says cold and hot, basically if the car is running you fill the jug to the line marked hot, and vice versa. Don't attempt to take the radiator cap off it the cars been running any length of time b/c pressure builds and scolding hot water will spew at you.

The way I do it is before I even crank the vehicle remove the cap, start the car if antifreeze should be added I add, and then wait for car to get up to running temp. when this happens the thermostat opens allowing water into the block then the level at the radiator opening goes down top it off and screw cap back on. If your having to add antifreeze chances are you have a leak some are minor and inexpensive to fix. Check your radiator caps gasket if it's worn go to autozone get a new one 3-7 bucks.

suggest to allow the engine to cool down. Open the radiator cap being very careful as the system may be under pressure and still could be scalding hot.Check strength of antifreeze and top up as necessary.Strength should be close to -45 below Zero.Fill radiator to the top with coolant ,taking into consideration strength of antifreeze in system. Replace radiator cap. fill radiator overflow tank to cold mark with the required antifreeze solution mix. Start engine and allow engine to warm up. You should be good to go.Note:Be certain to use the same type of antifreeze that is already in the system.
