...what could be wrong? is there something i can do to improve the mileage?
 
The other dudes are right + is there any excess weight your lugging around in the trunk. Every 100 lbs can take away a 1/2 mpg. Also, are you going the posted speed limit? Most cars are geared to get their best mpg's while going 60 mph. Any faster than that & the engine has to really push against wind resistance. The Gran Prix is a fairly aerodynamic car, but it's a heavy one.
 
shawn had a couple of good ideas. if you have cruise control then use it and if your tires are low that can cut your gas mileage down. it also has a lot to do with your driving habits too.
 
You can try a higher octane fuel or a different brand of gas. I have notice I get poor gas mileage with Arco Gas vs. Chevron/Shell/76. Also when was the oil changed last and are the tires properly inflated for you vehicle? The inside of the driver's side door there is a sticker that would tell you the proper psi for you tires if you have stock tires.
