it all depends on the gear ratio the higher the gear the quicker the car will become most v6 Pontiac's have a open rear end (non posi traction) with a 3.23 gear if you step it up to a posi traction rear end with a 3.91 gear you will see a good increase in quickness but remember when doing this it will throw off your speedometer by quit a bit
Yes, it can be done - but why? Will be trading economy for performance - suggest to evaluate the cost of the changeover versus the most you anticipate gaining by the switch.
With a V/6 you will Not see any appreciable difference by changing the rearend
(FYI) all the fourth gen 93-02 rearends are the same basic one dimentionaly and interchange just the gear ratios and posi are different ...
