I have a Firebird V6 1999, can I change the rear axle for the V8 rear

axle... would run better, or the same? If so, what years model are compatible with my car?
 
it all depends on the gear ratio the higher the gear the quicker the car will become most v6 Pontiac's have a open rear end (non posi traction) with a 3.23 gear if you step it up to a posi traction rear end with a 3.91 gear you will see a good increase in quickness but remember when doing this it will throw off your speedometer by quit a bit
 
The higher the ratio the faster accelleration but lower top speed I would put a V8 in a car like that.
 
Yes, it can be done - but why? Will be trading economy for performance - suggest to evaluate the cost of the changeover versus the most you anticipate gaining by the switch.

With a V/6 you will Not see any appreciable difference by changing the rearend
(FYI) all the fourth gen 93-02 rearends are the same basic one dimentionaly and interchange just the gear ratios and posi are different ...
