I'm currently looking at an 86 T/A and an 87 T/A. I'm not sure which one to get. The 86 has a turbo with extremely low miles. The 87 is a GTA with low miles and the owner did some engine work but I'm not sure what. Which one of these beautiful cars is going to give me the best thrill and what do I need to do to make it one of the fastest on the streets.

86 T/As never had a turbo; Unless someone put it on there...

At any rate I would still go with the 87 hands down.

I have an 86 and if I had a choice like that I would probably pick the 87, nothing wrong with the 86 but, the 87 has a little more power and plus its a GTA-Luxury and performance if I remember right I think thats what the GTA was.

The real reason why I would go with the 87 , besides the reasons 85305_TA mentioned, is the 87 has a roller cam from the factory and I don't like the third brakelight on the hatch window. The wheels are 16X8 on the GTA as well. The GTA is a great car but it is heavier than say a formula.

The formula was basically a firebird with T/A options. As far as the meaning of the word, I guess they lifted it from Formula 1 racing like they did for the Trans Am from the "Trans Am Series."

I had a 87 GTA and it was a fun car. The only issue I had was with the gauges. Everything was digital and was a big piece of crap. I have nothing against the mid to late 80's TA'S but as far as I am concerned nothing beats a 70's Pontiac with a real Pontiac motor.

Agreed. I hate the way GM bastardized the Firebird with a ch3vy engine.  :(

What is faster, a stock third gen formula or a stock third gen Trans Am, both with the most powerful engine in the options list.

Your all on crack! I would say go with the turbo! Thats a job already done for you.. U say ur lookin for speed.. Performance.. Power!? That turbo t/a will give u ne and all the thrill u need.. Just dont think ur superman, Them turbos r hella fast..How much is the price difference?

Crack? No. It depends if he put a turbo on the stock engine or if he built the engine for the turbo. If he did build it right, he probably has mucho money into it. If he just slap together a turbo setup on the stock engine I wouldn't trust it. So either way I wouldn't take the turbo car.To pricey or junky. OTOH if it were a factory 89 TTA I would get it. But once again, pricey.
