Ignition module, coil pack...

2001 Sunfire 2.4, the engine will turn over stong but not even sputter. It is getting gas, so I think it is the ignition module or the coil pack. Can these parts fail, then work again, then fail a week later? It did this last week, then after trying and trying, it just fired up. It ran all week, now is doing it again, but seemingly permanently. I just want to confirm that it is possible for these parts to fail, come back to life and then fail again completley. Thanks for your knowledge.

yes, it is possible but I would also check for corrosion which can cause the same symptoms

I was thinking of getting an ODB2 code reader, would this tell me exactly what is wrong, or would it just narrow it down to something in the ignition system?

Hey if you get a ignition control module buy one from ebay, they are really expensive at a parts store I got mine for $20. The first one didn't work but I contacted the seller and he sent me a 2nd one it worked.
