Cold-weather (October to February/March in this climate) makes it so I have to hold onto the key in the ignition and keep forward pressure on while driving it to keep the vehicle running....

Meaning after starting the vehicle, when the key moves back to the 'on' or 'run' position (whichever term is correct) in colder temperatures in the winter, the engine shuts off. Chinook weather where temperatures are warmer in the winter (above freezing) then it sometimes isn't a problem. Driving short distances is okay, but of course this isn't safe. Not sure how to start addressing whether I can fix this on my own or whether it would need to be taken into a shop. Taking it into a shop is not an option financially.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

Since it's not cold now you cant do any testing I assume since the problem isn't there.
Which also means if I suggest a part to replace you wont know for a long time whether the problem has been corrected.

Yes, exactly. I've reached out to an acquaintance as I just remembered they're a mechanic...but it may be a case of wait until the cold hits in Oct/Nov, and then try to figure it out from there....

More likely the grease they put on the lock , rod and ignition switch is old and gets stiffer in cold weather....
