I have a 99 Grand Am GT that I can not get started. When I insert the ignition key, I can not turn the switch, it is stuck in the OFF position. Furthermore, the steering wheel will not lock, I can turn it from stop to stop. The transmission is in Park. Any ideas?

This happened on a snowy and slushy day. Is there any chance this is moisture related?

Ignition Swith Won't Turn...

I had a 93 Grand Am that I once couldn't get the key out of the switch after turning the key to the off position. What I found was that the switch had gone bad and I would suspect in your case that the tumblers can't come back into alignment to let you turn it fully to off and remove the key. It's a lot like an old lock that you have to wiggle the key into and out of and force to turn.

It's a dealer only part when I had mine replaced. Pretty much they take apart the stearing wheel, remove the old switch and put the new switch in. You'll also obviously get a new set of igition keys with it as well. Shouldn't cost you more than a hundred or so.
