Redlined WS 6

Has anyone put headers on their WS 6. How tough was it and what brand did you use? I would like to find a midpipe that would replace the cats but all the mid pipes I have found stop at the cats and do not go all the way to the manifolds. any help would be great thanks

I used hooker shorty headers with magnaflow high flow cats. it is a TOUGH job to get done, and depending on your needs, not really worth the money to have it done. If your skilled enough to do it yourself, and have enough time, thats what Id do. You have to pull the motor on these cars. and its only a marginal increase in power. It will however work well with other mods such as a chip, full 3inch eshaust ram air. etc. Then its worth it. But if you only want to put in some better sound, and a few more ponies, Id suggest going another route.

where can I get a midpipe that will be an improvement and maybe eliminate teh cats all together

I just shop around online, and yes, as long as you dont live or drive to often in california, cutting out the cats altogether works better than anything, they are SO restrictive to our cars. But if I remember correctly, anything built by GM after 1997 there is sencors in front and behind the cats. So that means that you cant remove them withought a chip to trick the computor, or else it will start throwing codes, and you will burn up fast.

Jet-Hot Longtubes. They had to go in from under the car and the engine doesn't have to come out. My biggest problem I had was on the left side. You have to move the engine up to get the header to slide in. Barely though, didn't even have to remove the mount bolt, just a little pry upwards with my prybar.

As for the Cats, the Jet-hots come with EGR, A.I.R and front O2 sensors. As for the rear, you can but O2 simulators that just plug into the rear O2 harness's. You can also buy the oversize Y-Pipe from Jet-Hot that has Cats in it to hook right up to the headers.

Basically, you can do longtubes with cats,egr,A.I.R, front and rear O2's keeping you completely emmissions legal besides in Cali. If you decide to do headers let me know and I'll give you the rundown on installing them. You'll need to set aside a weekend unless you're good with tools and don't get frustrated easily. I had the bonus of using the shop, lift and my air tools where I work.

You won't burn anything up without the rear O2's, you'll just throw the rear O2 codes and the PCM will fall into fail and effects mode running on preset perimeters to protect the engine. All the rear ones do is play tattletale. They don't affect LTFT"S, STFT's, STIT's or any other fueling.

If I've payed attention you have a 2000 WS6. There is no chip for OBD II cars. The PCM has to be reprogramed via EFILive, HP Tuners or LS1 edit. Most tuners charge upwards of 400.00. You can send in your PCM to a few places and have it mail order tuned for half that. Just have to watch who you send it to.

There is chips, My body shop friend that I bought my firehawk from has a 99 and a 2002 WS6 TA, and has chips from hypertech in both of them.

Not possible. LS1 PCM's do not have a removable chip lke earlier GM's did. Hypertech makes a handheld tuner that plugs into the DLC connector and then erases the EPROM then reprograms the changed perimeters. There is also Diablo Sport and Crane handhelds but they do the same. Hpertech's are pretty much worthless on an LS1 car that has anything more done to it other than the air filter and cat back. Once beyond those 2 mods they tend to lean out with the HPP 3. The Crane and Diablo Sport are a little better allowing more changes than the HPP3 but still cannot compare to tuning software.

Go back and ask your friend again, I'm betting he has HPP 3 power(laugh)tuning done with a handheld programmer that cost 350-400 new x 2 seeing as you can only do one car with them. That's why when people sell them the buyers ask if the car has been returned to stock. The HPP3 records the VIN, if you hook it to another car it won't let you do anything and tells you VIN doesn't match. Been there and sold my Hypercrap for 80 bucks on LS1Tech. Bought my EFILive on tech for less than the HPP3 cost.lol

I also have a chip in my aftermarket LS2 in my 96 firehawk, Other mods are full 3 inch exhaust, ram air, heads are ported and polished. Im dyno'd at 430 Hp. (crank) I also just ordered an electronic timing adjuster. That will go well with the nitrous I plan on installing on my car.

Your Lt1 car with an LS2 may have a chip.

Links to these "chips" for OBD II PCM's please. Perferably 98-07 LSx equipped cars.
