Has anyone successfully upgraded the instrument panel to a digital one?

No. I plan on doing a conversion on my own and was wondering if anyone else had already done so.
My intentions are to upgrade the panel directly.
I have researched doing so with a Raspberry Pi and PiCAN.

In my layman's understanding the software is embedded in the hardware that performs the designed functions?
My background in IT is in what you would consider the dinosaur age. IBM midrange platform, now called the I-Series. The OS was specifically designed for the platform and can not run on any other platform.

Thanks for the tip. I will open a thread when the modification is complete with step by step instructions. Yes the software will be embedded in the hardware (running a raspberry pi)
