I have a mustang scoop that is functional on the hood/trunk of my 85 fiero se with a 2.5L in it. I was thinking about removing the stock intake line so that it got better air flow but I was wondering how good of an idea this is? would it be any improvement over stock or should I just leave it alone?

I noticed that my wording sounds newbish so I wanted to cover this question a little better. The intake hose that starts from the vent and follows up to the air filter. If this hose was to be removed and just the airfilter in place would this be an improvement over stock as far as longivity? Some engines respond to more air flow better than others. Also would this effect the manifold cooling vent hose? The hose that disrupts air from the intake hose and blows it directly on the manifold.

The reason for this idea was that if this will improve my fuel economy and lifespan of my engine without causing my manifold to overheat I'd probably do this the minute I walk out of work, but, if not then I want to just leave it be. And I know that the car gets killer fuel mileage, but, come on if you can get more out of it your going to try, right?

The hose going to the lower quarter panel is actually a cold air intake. The scoop on the decklid aids in cooling the engine compartment. The Fiero is designed to draw cool air from under the car and exit out the grates next to the decklid. Adding the scoop to the decklid aids in cooling the compartment temps down which helps the engine run cooler increasing efficiency and improving longevity of the engine.

Some folks add on side panels that have larger scoops and they replace the corrigated tube with aluminum tubing to improve air flow.

There are also small scoops that replace the stock vent cover on the side without having to replace the panel. These can improve highway gas mileage and improve throttle response at highway speeds.

Personally I would keep the cold air intake because if you install an open side air filter the hot engine air will be drawn in reducing MPG and power slightly.
