First off, My name is Aric. I am an IT Guy in North Carolina. I have very minimal mechanic knowledge. My Father in Law was a mechanic for Oldsmobile since the '70's and then switched to Pontiac. He always did the vehicle maintenance on our cars. He passed away unexpectedly at the end of April. I was able to get a little bit of knowledge from him before we lost him, but not enough to know what to do in most cases.
I've been a member for a couple of days trolling through the forum's to see if I could figure out what was ailing my wife's car, and now that I've figured it out (and didn't see any reference here about the issue) I thought I would make my first post in hopes of contributing to the site!
Here was the issue:
1998 Pontiac Sunfire Convertible 2.4L
Rough Idling and loss of power when accelerating.
I initially replaced the ignition coils and the plugs and while this did seem to help, it did not completely remedy the situation.
I finally borrowed an OBD II Scanner from a friend and received the following error: Cyl. 3 Misfire
I also have an Olds Alero with the same engine, so I simply removed the Ignition Coil Housing from it and mounted it to the Sunfire! VIOLA, it's running like a champ now. Afterwards I started inspecting the one that came off the Sunfire and noticed about a quarter inch size area with what initially appears to be a soot covered spiderweb, but is actually an area where the housing has been arcing.
Anyway, Hope this helps someone!
