I'm fairly new with my Lemans(1st car) and I'm trying to decipher where this annoying squeak is coming from. It only does it while going down the road when you hit a bump or are on a rough road. It's definitely coming from the back and it sounds like the drivers side. It's pretty loud an sounds like metal to metal but I can't tell if its coming from the inside or out. Please help!

The top of the spring where it rests against the body should have a rubber cushion which may be gone due to the age of the car. In addition check if the exhaust pipe is hitting anything.

I had a squeak in the front also where a rubber cushion was worn down due to age and WD-40 cured it, would this also work for this cushion?

Have you looked at it, after 41 years it may no longer be there.

It's still there but it's very worn down, I tried WD-40 but it hasn't done anything, I guess it needs to be replaced, assuming that's the problem

that's most likely the issue. Change the cushion!

Just to verify: first car or first 72' Lemans? Nonetheless, great score!

Never worked on a 72' Lemans but I do know if your going to fix those springs/cushions yourself. Make sure those springs don't go a flying. They are a supper loaded slinkey that will cause serious damage to you and or your car if not removed carefully and correctly. As a precaution I always tether mine to the chassis prior to removal. Good luck > Great car!

Just to clarify the OP was talking about the rear springs, they are nowhere as dangerous to work with as the fronts.

It is my first car and my first 72 Lemans! I sprayed more WD40 into the cushion and it seemed to fix it for the moment, or at least until I can get new cushions and have the right help to put them on. Thanks for all the help

1. Jack up back of car and remove both rear wheels.
2. Support frame of car on jack stands and raise rear axle a few inches.
3. Unscrew lower shock bolts and disconnect shocks from lower control arm.
4. Lower rear axle and the springs will just about fall out on their own.
5. Install new cushions on upper spring pocket and reinstall everything.
