just purchased a 2008 SV6 and the temp gauge is showing straight up at 12 o'clock and there is no heat.

Sometimes the heat starts right up when the weather is not so cold and most time it never starts until after 10 minutes or more of driving. I smell antifreeze through the vents when the fan is on. I don't see a leak and I topped of the radiator and the reservoir tank.

You have to pressure test the cooling system to find the leak.
Is the front passenger side carpet wet or smells of antifreeze?

Mostly when temp gauge is all up means bad engine coolant temperature sensor, its cheap. By the antifreeze smell check heating hoses, connectors and TEEs

Maybe the front or rear heating core is leaking if the carpet is wet. You can have a hose leaking as well. If you smell it their is a leak some where
