I am new to the forum and a new Fiero owner. I have an 86 Fiero SE 2m6. It has 149k on it. When I first bought it, it had lots of rattling coming from the engine. I first found that the guts of the catylitic converter was all loose, so I cut it open, removed the pieces and welded a cover over it. The car is rust free and i was able to remove the clamps and bolts without braking any. I also found that there were several heat shields that were loose. So after fixing these things I fired up the engine, but there was still a load rattling noise (more of a rattle then a knock). I next dropped the oil pan and inspected the crank and rod bearings. That all looked good.
So, I am wondering where the noise is coming from. Above idle the noise goes away. Around 1500rpm and above it sounds normal. Also when I rotated the crank with pan off, I noticed there was some play in the timing chain and gears. Is this normal? could that be the noise source?
Thanks,
Ron
