Hello to the forum,
Well I'm thinking of removing the 2.4 in this 96 Sunfire I have, and replacing it with a V6. Reason...I can't seem to be able to locate a good used 2.4,but there are plenty of different sized V6 engines around.

So, after doing a quick search on the subject, and coming up with very little information about how to,or even if it can be done within reason, I thought it just might be quicker to ask.

The car now has a 5 speed which might be a problem. There doesn't seem to be any FWD V6 cars with manual transmissions.

I did find one thread where someone installed a 3.8 into a J model, but there wasn't any information as to how much had to be altered in order to accommodate the engine. It sure was a clean job. Looked every bit factory.

Anyway, if anyone has any tales about what works and what does not in this type of exchange that they'd like to share, please let me know.

As always, all replies are respected and appreciated.

Why arent you just rebuilding the current 2.4? It would be a lot easier than trying to engineer a V6 into a car that never came with one.

The engine isn't rebuildable.

It doesn't look as if there's that much difference in size between a Sunfire and a Chevy Corsica, which I think had an optional 3.1. it seems that a change in the front suspension calibration should compensate for any extra weight.

A super charged 3.8 would be interesting, but alas... in the end the V6 is just a thought, and I'll most likely end up putting a 2.2 in place of the 2.4 because the 2.2's are easy to find and a direct fit. But it would still be nice to know how much work would be involved.

Found a 2.4,but its an automatic.

Well...I found a 99 convertible with a 2.4,but its an automatic. Are there any differences in the 2 engines?
I know that some imports had different torque curves for the automatics, which was mostly achieved by changing the cam profile. I didn't see anything about this in the FSM,but I'm just wanting to make sure.

Since I have the complete car, I can always convert the stick if there is a difference between the 2 engines. But I rather like the 5 speed, even though the auto seems to have more pickup. I'm sure its just me and the cars are really about the same performance wise.

As always,thanks for any input.

Other than the attachment to the trani there is no internal difference between the automatic and manual 2.4. You can try looking at www.j-body.org for people who have made the change.

Thanks for the tip,I'll try checking the site again. For some reason, I wasn't able to find the site earlier.
