Lowering Springs & OEM Shocks

I have decided I want to lower my sunfire, and was wondering if anyone has done it. I am debating purchasing lowering springs and installing them on OEM struts(shocks) and taking a chance.

Is it worth spending the money and replacing the shocks and springs? or will just lowering springs work fine?

I've heard that putting them on OEM struts will make the struts wear out quicker. Not sure if that's true or not.
