Major Oil Leak!

Down pipe nuts are free now..thanks for the tip! Then one more nut on the head and the manifold is ready to come out! Then on to the water pump. Will let you know how that goes.

Down pipe came off real easy. Working on the Water Pump, does the lower motor mount really have to come out? This car is like an Onion...too many levels to it..lol

LOL..thanks for the words of wisdom! Will follow that path of my elders and make you all proud!

Water pump is out! But the inner timing chain cover still seems hung up by something.....?

It seems to be behind where the auto tensioner for the timing chain is mounted. Is there something I'm missing? Or maybe a bolt they didn't tell me about????

Inner Timing chain cover has been replaced! Timing chain and pulleys installed.....taking it one step at a time!

I got the a new Timing Chain Tensioner and installed it, but I can't seem to get it to unload in the car. I can get it to on the bench????

Well, you're missing something in the process, simple I'm sure. Take a break, have a cup oj coffee and then check you steps again. It'll come to you!

You were right again my friend! Took a break, had a beer and tried again and got it to unload properly. Motor turns freely by hand! Got the water pump installed and buttoned up the timing chain cover. Hope to finish it up later today!

Thanks for sticking it out with me!

I was just reviewing your original post, you said the engine had a noisy lifter? Have you had a chance to address that issue yet with all your efforts? One other thing you might consider before you fire it back up again is check the compression.

You also mentioned synthetic oil previously. There are a lot of opinions on the subject, some highly charged. What I've heard and it sounds logical to me, is that oil, conventional and synthetic, never looses it's viscosity but it does become dirty.

Thus, I try to continue the habit of having the oil and filter changed every 3,000 miles. I use conventional on mine. (I clocked 335,000 miles on a 1988 Mustang 5.0) If the engine has over 100,000 miles I would consider using a higher weight like 20/50.

Anyway, good luck with the rest of this. Looking forward to hearing good news when you're finished. I hope your son appreciates your efforts!

Just have the exhaust manifold and fill fluids. Then fire it up! So far so good!
Wait and see on the lifter noise after getting it back together.

As far as the lifter noise goes, I'm sure it was due to low oil level when they pulled in the driveway. There was a train from the road to the garage of oil. Going to go back to a conventional "High Mileage" 5W-30 oil from Castrol. Checking for coolant leaks now before re-installing the lower transaxle mount. My step son and his wife are really appreciative of all the work and $$$$ I've saved them by taking this on.

Thanks!

Got the last parts put in this morning.....she started right away and took a few seconds to settle down (new plugs and all). Within 3 minutes I had a puddle of oil under the car!!!!!!! WTF!!!!

The valley where the plugs are is dry this time, but it seems to be coming from the back of the motor on the driver's side. The car is still on a jack stand on the passenger side only, but waiting for oil dry to soak up the oil before I can get underneath for a better look.

Any other thoughts where the oil could be leaking from?

For some reason I can't post pictures???

Thanks!

Ok, there are a couple options here;

1. You have a leak from another source as yet unknown to you that you will have to track down as best you can. You need to get 'eyes on' the source. If you can't get your head around to it, try mirrors or a small camera. You can use your phone video camera with enough light around.

2. The leak is coming from one of the components you just installed. Recheck your housings, retrace steps.

And now the oil dip stick won't go in all the way???????? Is that related?
If it is in the area of the housings you just reinstalled then it is possibly a gasket misaligned or a loose bolt (ACK!!) in the case. Sounds like something didn't go back together quite as planned/designed. I hate to say this, but you may have to pull some of those parts back off to find out.

Hey, look at the bright side; it's always easier to do it the second time! You can just say you were practicing the first go around.

The only parts on that side of the motor that we removed are the exhaust camshaft cover and the end plate in gasket...will check that first.

The dipstick and related components below were not removed...ie oil pan and such. Taking a couple days as a break, then will clean up the speedy dry under the car and try to clean the backside of the block of all the oil. Check seals and gaskets the fire it up and watch for the leak...if I don't find something before.

Thanks for getting back to me!

The car is level now on stands.....thought that might help find out where the leak is coming from. Tonight going to wipe down the back side of the block and then start it back up to help find the leak. Can't find any info on the dip stick issue, but maybe one will lead to the other....hopefully!

Think I found it! Looks like the oil pressure sensor blew out also! Got it replaced an no leaks so far!

Thanks again!
