Modern engine on firebird, can it be done ?

I want to buy a pontiac firebird 95-97 but the engine is killing me. In my country ( romania ) taxes and insurance are based on engine cubic centimeters alone so for a 3.7l engine taxes are above 1000 euro/year.

Bmw for example has rear traction and some have automatic gear, maybe one of their engines fits.

Can i change the engine with a 1.6-2.2l or even 1.6-2.2l diesel ? Anyone ever done this ?

Nobody in this country puts a foreign engine into a Firebird. They usually swap the V6 to a V8. So you will have to engineer the swap yourself. Have you checked with any European clubs for American cars?
