1999 grand am V6 auto tranny. My car has been "humming" or "whining" since I bought it from a friend cheap. I was going to town the other day and it slipped in and out of gear a few times while i was driving down the road. not accelerating or anything. eventually it slipped out of gear and would not go back in even if i tryed to manually shift it. I had to walk away because I forgot my cell phone that day..... anyway when I went back to the car with my brother I started the car and it went into gear and I was able to drive 5 miles before it slipped out of gear again we towed it to the house and when we got there the car drove a few miles again before slipping.

Could this be the toque converter? low fluid? do I need a new tranny? I plan on changing the fluid and filter. should I waist my time?

the whining sound is an indication of a slipping transmission, check the fluid level and add if necessary, if the fluid level is fine you probably toasted the transmission but you can try replacing the filter and fluid.
