My 1999 pontiac sunfire won't start unless I press on the gas. Any idea of what's going...

...on? I just bought this car yesterday, today being February 29, 2008. Already I'm having, what I'm hoping, are mild problems. The pipes in the back have some sort of black substance in them. I don't know anything about cars. My boyfriend picked it out for me since he knows a whole lot more about cars than I do. Yesterday the odometoer read 141,000 miles. This morning I drove the car to work and it read 888888 for a short period of time, then it jumped back to 141,000. And we also noticed that the back pipes were leaking water. Is this good or bad? Will someone please tell me what's going on with this crazy car!
 
A little bit of soot or black carbon in the exhaust pipe at the back is very normal. Also a normal part of combustion is water which usually leaks out of a little hole in the muffler or is expelled out of the rear pipe. The starting thing might just be a maitenance thing where you have to clean the TBI and the IAC bores out of a gritty black carbon soot. If that doesn't work, you either have a bad IAC motor or the circuit that drives it. The deal with the odometer is kind of weird. This could be a symptom of a problem to do with the starting condition, PCM, or something separate with the dash cluster. Too many factors to be specific with that one.

May be there is something in your car's silencer.
There are some problems in the circuit, I think you should consult a mechanic.

There is also a possibility that the car has worn out after been driven so much.
 
you dont buy cars because they look cute or whatever.... things to look for is tire wear tail pipe for black or oily and under the car for any wet spots then you get in and check everything the car has....take a good look at the floor for wear .... sorry but it sounds like you brought someones junk
