My 99' pontiac montana is running hot. What could be the problem?

A car will overheat when coolant is leaking outside (hoses, cracks) or inside the engine ( head gasket etc), a fan not kicking on will cause you to overheat as well. The least likely problem will be your water pump, they go out but rarely ( it could have a leak)

Could be the same problem I just had with my wife's '01. The thermostat was faulty. It would get very hot, then the fans would come on and it would cool down then heat up again. Changed the t-stat and all was well. See my post on "Overheating Problem". Good luck.
