My Pontiac Grand Am's radio makes an engine like noise when I listen to it.?

I have a 97 Pontiac Grand Am SE with factory OEM radio/tape system. I've noticed that when I listen to it while driving, you can hear an engine like noise. I then discovered that when I listen to the radio with the engine turned off, the radio plays normally with no unwanted sound. Does anybody know what could be causing this and if so, what can be done to fix it?
