...Bonneville? My darn windshield wipers won't turn off when switch set to OFF. An auto-shop said I had to pay $800 to replace the electronics under my steering column. Does that sound logical? Could there be another alternative? Thanks

It could be right, Pontiac had a recall on my 94 Grand Prix. The harness shorted out and quit working. It could be the same case, so call the Pontiac dealer and see if there is a safety recall and if there is one the repair is free.

On my model, there is a small harness that goes around the steering wheel, after years of usage the cables worked themselves and broke the wires. The repair was simple to do and is very easy if this is the case.

Good luck.

May be a bad switch. Being on the column, you may need to change the electronics for more than just the wipers. $800 may not seem too bad. Try pricing the part at an auto parts store or a dealer. That may give you a ballpark $.

As an alternative, you can try using a big hammer to smash them while they are moving. Ha! Ha!

If they are talking about a wiper switch, the mitchell books the labor @ 2.3hrs Switch est. about 80.00 plus a reasonable Diag fee of 1.0hrs I get 400.00$
assuming that thats your problem. I think more likely that the park switch is bad in your wiper motor is bad.

You could always pull the wiper fuse and put rain ex on your windshield before the rain comes.

You could get really creative and put a toggle switch on the power feed to the switch!
