My problem is the origonal key is well lets say lost for now. If I go to the dealer to get a key do they need to have the van to program it as well or?? The kid that was working on my van is not available and I need to get this thing fixed and moved

Your Montana most likely has a key that needs to be programmed but I wouldn't know for sure because you didn't post the year of your vehicle.

Please take the time to add your vehicle information to your signature, this way it appears each time you make a post.

Doing this will help speed up responses, getting you the information you need in a timely manor.

You could have an automotive locksmith make a house call to cut two new keys.

2000 could have sworn I put that in

OK normally if you have one working key, you can use that key to program other new keys. Since you saying the only working key you had is gone. you will have to have a locksmith that can cut a key and program it come out to your home.

Or have the vehicle towed to the dealer to have this done.

Here are the normal instructions for programming new keys with at least one functioning key found in your owners manual

To program the new key:
1. Insert the ignition key in the ignition and start the
engine. If the engine will not start see your dealer
for service.
2. After the engine has started, turn the key to OFF,
and remove the key.
3. Insert the key to be programmed and turn it to RUN
within 10 seconds of removing the previous key.
4. The SECURITY message will turn off once the
key has been programmed. It may not be apparent
that the SECURITY message went on due to how
quickly the key is programmed.
5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 if additional keys are
to be programmed.
If you are ever driving and the SECURITY message
comes on and stays on, you will be able to restart your
engine if you turn it off. Your PASS-Key III system,
however, is not working properly and must be serviced
by your dealer. Your vehicle is not protected by the
PASS-Key III system at this time.
If you lose or damage a PASS-Key III key, see your
dealer or a locksmith who can service PASS-Key III to
have a new key made.

I was able to program a new key with out the dealer this is how

From the service manual:
There are actually two procedures, but one involves using a programming tool which only dealers would have access to, so I am going to leave that one out.
30 Minute Relearn Procedure (Steps): This is for a "replacement" (new) key (no original available)
1) Insert a "Master" Passkey III (PK3) Key (the one with the black plastic cover as shown above).
2) Turn the Ignition to ON, but do NOT start the engine. You should see the "Security" message on the dash for about 10 minutes and then it will turn off.
3) Turn OFF the Ignition and wait 5 seconds.
4) Repeat the above steps (1-3) a total of 3 times, or a total of 30 minutes.
5) After the third time (including turning back to the OFF position), start the van. The van should now have "learned" the transponder information and will allow it to start and continue to run.
Important Notes:
- When the above procedure is used, all previously learned keys will be erased from system memory.
- Additional keys can be learned immediately after the relearn procedure. This is done by inserting the additional key and turning the ignition to the RUN position within 10 seconds of removing the previously learned key

That is great, I am glad you got a key programmed.

Where was this information found?

How where you able to get the key cut? From the VIN?

Yes went to the Chevy dealer in Borger TX with registration and drivers license they looked up the key code and cut it for me. And left me with the printed key code sheet so if I ever have the issue again
