Can someone help me with finding some more performance parts for my TPI? Ive got exhaust, chip, ram air, and billstine shocks, I dont really want a supercharger, ( money ) or to bore out the engine, for fear that it will kill the value of my 91 GTA. Any ideas on a good intake? Or maybe different heads? How bad would a 50-75 shot of NOS be for the engine, I know enough about cars that NOS aint good, but what about just in moderation, like at the track, or when some punk kid in a stang or a rice burner pulls beside me?

OK, time to put an adjustable fuel pressure regulator on, bump it up to 50 PSI, hog out the wall that is cast in the plnum right behind the throttle body, 180 T-stat, bump timing up to 8-12 degrees, and if you want runners, check out SLP but save the stock ones so when you go to sell the car.... There are some other things but, this should get you started. I wouldn't worry about the runners unless you get a much bigger cam. For heads I would go with some AFR L-98 replacements. But to get the most out of them I would put a little bigger cam in it.

Oh, I forgot. Nitrous would be alright at that level but, for me, I am a "all throttle and no bottle" kind of guy.

I totaly agree with the all throtle no bottle way of thinking. I look at nitrous as a way to cheap horsepower on a weak engine.

ok, thanks for the info, guys, but I dont agree with the NOS is " for a weak engine" NOS can make or break a race, especially if the rice burner sewing machine engined civic has it also and is running his mouth. Itll help keep the good ol American Muscle Car king of the streets/tracks. P.S. what will bumping the timing do to my car?? wont it make it idle rough?

Absolutely not! It will make it run smoother if anything. But. what it does is gives you a little better throttle response and low end torque. Advancing the timing increases cylinder pressure and that is what makes torque. You will have to find out what your car likes by running it at the track and changing the timing every 2-3 runs and see what is quickest.

A word of caution though. If your going to be making more power, you better start thinking about the chassis and suspension. Is this a T-Top car?

And if you need nitrous to beat a sake sipper (another name for rice burners), well..... I beat the hell outta those girly cars without nitrous, and they are running boost and nitrous.

hahaha! nice! Sake sipper!? never heard that one, and yes, it is a t-top car, how do I advance the timing? can I do it myself?? or do you need special equipment? i know that with T-Tops, it will twist the frame if you have too much power, but Im not worried, I have frame stiffeners. I think that should be sufficient ennough, dont you think?

Well yes, if you have subframe connectors. There is other things to do but , I have to admit I am a little more than drunk right now.

As far as doing timing, you can do it yourself. If I were you, get a dial back timming light. It will serve you better in the long run. But, if you have any timing light at the moment, hook it up. Loosen the distributor bolt. Let the car warm up. Then check the timing. It should be at 6 degrees BTDC. That is the stock spec. Twist the distributor counter clockwise to advance. You will have to play around with the timing. Every car is different. You do know how to check the timing don't you? To us old guys it is second nature, but younger guys don' t know what the hell we are talking about! LOL

a little drunk eh?? right on, ok, I have not checked the timing on this motor yet, I have not really been under the skin yet in it, only in older cars, Ill check the timing, and try that, I am still a little worried that it might make it run rough, I had a 1976 rally sport camaro, it had a 396 BB in it, the timing was off just a bit, and it sounded nice, but it ran like shit. But, if you say it helps, Ill give it a go.. Thanks

If you are going to time it, you need to disconnect the ESC wire above the heater blower motor. It is a single wire that is brn w/yellow stripe I think. It should be sticking out of the big harness that goes across the firewall.

Yes, he is correct. If you leave it hooked up, the computer will keep adjusting the timing as you are adjusting and timing will stay the same. But when your done timing don't forget to hook it back up.

tired of this shit

Ok, Im getting tired of these stupid little problems, i just put a new rear end in it yesterday, a 3:23 gear posi, I hear a little faint whine comming from the rear end, not loud but quite, only when I am cruising slow at the same speed. What the hell is wrong with my car now??????

Your probably a little low on rearend fluid. Have you changed the fluid in that rear? I would. I would use synthetic, like Redline or Royal Purple. You will pick up a few ponys, too!

If you are building a race car then use NOS. A real street car is pure cubic inches, horsepower and torque. To bad pontiac did not keep a pontiac motor in the TA'S because all of them after 1980 are just jazzed up camaro's. Nothing beats the monster torque of a properly built pontiac 455, now that is pure driving excitement.

I did change the fluid when I put it in, I still hea a whine, its like the gears aint lined up properly or somthing, I dont know if that is possable, but that is kinda what I think it sounds like.

hey bro, try these guys www.tpiparts.net theyve got a lot of stuff!!!!!!

Well it could very well be that the gears were not setup right. I wouldn't worry about it. Just drive until they break (they probably won,t behind a chevy) or save up and get some new ones setup properly.

Sounds like a plan, What is your take on a full locker rear end?(Annalogkid455) I know its not great for it in the city, but I really like the idea of it. and what the hell did that guy mean when he said NOS aint flammable!? Was he drunk, or am I really out of the loop in that subject?

I am using a Detroit locker tru-track posi in my 76 TA and it is a gear style posi that reacts so quick that it is amazing.

Nos itself is not flamable. It is an accelerant. It is 2 nitrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. It cools the incoming charge and provides extra O2 for combustion.
