I was on here almost a year ago while I was basically restoring my 99 Montana to a new vehicle. I put an all new suspension, brakes, plugs, water pump, Fuel Pump, etc. etc. you name it I did it. Well, I'll be damned if my temp didnt start fluctuating quickly this past week and my overflow tank was full and bubbling. So I thought the thermo wasn't opening. Anyways, long story short I continued to experience these drastic temp swings and took it to a shop. So I got a call yesterday saying my rear gasket was leaking and I had A CRACKED BLOCK...YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! I'm so glad all my work to get my family vehicle up to specs has resulted in this! So anyways, obviously I'm screwed so I'm going over my options and I'm thinking a 3.4 out of a wrecked vehicle or something. But I need some info before making a move...first, would it be a waste of time to buy another 3.4 that hasn't had the gaskets beefed up? Also, can I fit a 3.8 into this small space and expect it to mate to the existing tranny? Also, is there any long shot of a liquid block repair working? If so, what?? obviously, I'm kinda grasping at different options but I need some info from someone that has dealt with this situation...or should i sell this money pit for what I can get and start over with another vehicle??? Thanks ....~Mike

First off I am sorry to hear that you need engine work . Boy you ask some big questions, now this is just my opinion , I would not put a 3800 in there I think it would not mate up correctly or even fit in there and by chance it would it would be to much money . If you are sure the block is cracked then liquid type snake oil may not be the answer either, however at this point I would try it cause you really have nothing to lose? I would be concerned if it would clog up the rad or the water pump but I would try anyhow but that's me. I hope others chime in with there opinion also. As far as a new motor you would have to price out a new motor and repair cost and see if the van is would be worth the money or just buy a new one. You never said how many miles you have and what kind of shape she is in. Good luck and keep us posted.I know around this area you can buy a used montana with apx 100,000 miles for about $3000 - $4000 .

I hope more members chime in .

I would also not put another size engine in there. just not worth the effort considering everything from the mounts to the size of the compartment to the computer might have to be replaced.

I would look for a used motor in a car that with a back end accident or minor accident or better yet that has not been in a wreck. I did that once, and the motor had sustained internal damage from the impact. Look for a rebuilt. A rebuilt one should have the upgraded lower intake manifold gaskets.

The 3.4 and 3.8 are not interchangeable. One is a 60 degree block, the other is 90 degrees.
