Hi everyone,

I'm posting this thread to introduce myself to the Pontiac community, thanks for having me.

My name is Anthony B. And I am 23 years old, I'll be 24 on Thursday. I'm married and a proud father of a 10 month old baby boy. My passion for cars itself is unexplainable and I am now a proud owner of a 69 custom-S. I am fairly new to old muscle and carbureted cars altogether, but not to building engines etc. I have worked at mechine shops building engines and am a self tought custom fabricator. I enjoy welding (TIG AC/DC) and drag racing. I own two other cars, a 1995 Eclipse GST 900FWHP drag car and a 1990 Eagle Talon FWD 1000+ fwhp drag car going to the FWD DSM record at 8.2 @ 168mph.

My plans for the Pontiac are to get it in tip top shape, paint it silver metallic, do all black interior, and beef up the engine a little.

OR

Clone it into a GTO With my own custom touches. All input is highly appreciated as well as constructed criticism. Thanks again for welcoming me to this forum and I can't wait to get to know more about my car.

Things I know about the car so far and it's condition;

99% rust free Fremont CA car
Matching numbers car
Hi Comp built 350
Edlebrock Carb (guy said it was 4bbl) not sure what it is because he lied about stuff. Said it was a 326 and it obviously isn't.
Rebuilt TH400 with shift kit (haven't confirmed if it's a th350 or 400, just going off the guy)
10 bolt posi rear end 3.73 gears
Full stainless steel dual exhaust from headers back
Some kind of cam, lopes really nice.
Has old school crager s/s wheels 14"
Has oil pressure, water temp and voltage gauges under dash
MSD ignition and wires
New shocks and bushings
Factory P/S, factory A/C,
Disc brakes in front, not sure if factory
Edlebrock Air filter/Cover
Edlebrock Valve Coves
Has Original Black Plates

Problems with car;

Needs paint.
Needs interior.
Right blinker doesn't work.
Windshielf wipers don't work.
Headlights don't work, kinda fixed this today, passenger side was missing all plugs and driver side was unplugged. Need help on this.
Left parking light doesn't work.
Tach reads wrong, says I'm going 120mph when maybe going 70-80.
I think it's running really rich, smell fumes.
Dies only sometimes when coming to stop or turning all the way when backing out??
AC needs some pieces.
Needs some trim.
Needs weather stripping.
Pass. Hood hinge bent.

Things done/purchased:

Ordered hood hinge, received it today and installed it.
Ordered black carpet, black headliner, black arm rest assembly's,
Purchased 5 qts oil, oil filter, spark plugs, both underhood belts, headlights, rear blinker lights, all new under dash fuses, new rear cooper cobra tires (due to blow out on freeway, fronts are BFG Radial T/A).
Found out head light wires were gone. Installed new headlights and got them all to work, but they are not working properly. I think I have the wiring backwards, because it will be both hi beams on or one hi beam and one low beam, so I have to do more tomorrow I ran out of sun light.
Installed a few fuses.
Tinkered with the Carburetor and I think it actually runs stronger. I may be wrong.

I think that's everything so far. My wife purchased it for me on Saturday 25th Oct, 2014. I am trying to restore it as quickly as possible, so any and all help is highly appreciated.

Thanks for your time and God bless you all,

Anthony B.

Welcome to the forum. Not sure where to begin or which of your statements are questions.
1. The speedometer is probably off because when they changed the rear gears they did not change the driven gear in the transmission.
2. From the factory a 69 Lemans would have a TH350, you can tell by pan shape.

Ok, thanks for the info.

I will definitely take a look when I get a chance to make sure. I'm also trying to find a way out to see if it's the H/O 350, the hi compression one. The guy said it was, with Keith black Pistons blah blah blah, no paperwork so who knows. I would like to hope he is telling some of the truth. The engine bay is really clean as well as the engine for being 45 years old. I'm just on the hunt for all the information I can get about this car, the how to's, to identifying what it has etc.

Again, I thank you for your reply, I love this car and im excited to start my life with it 😉.

God bless,

Anthony B.

the original factory documentation you can purchase from www.phs-online.com

Thanks Mel, that's a great site. I will be orderingg up all the information I can about the car, thanks again for that.

On a side note, if it's ok to ask this on this thread, I would like to know if you would be able to help me with simple things?

Like tuning carb, and small performance modifications. Also, would I be able to identify if I have a cam installed without tear down? And what things can I do to make more horsepower, I'm not looking to break records or define physics, but I would like to make atleast half the power my 90 eagle Talon as (1k). 500whp would be the line for me, well for now that is lol. If I need to start a new thread for these questions, please let me know and I will. Thanks again for your help, you've been such a great help thus far.

God bless,

Anthony B.

only way you can tell anything about the cam is by renting/buying a dial indicator, removing a valve cover and charting the full range of pushrod movement as you turn the engine over by hand. This will give you lift and duration but will not tell you who made the cam or what model it is. Just post any other questions you have.

Ok cool, thanks. I will check local stores for one and try to do it soon.

Next question, if your standing in front of the car, on the left side of the carburetor there is this arm, when I move it (and it barely moves at all) the idle goes up. The car sounds better and was wondering what this was and what do I do with it? How do I tune the carb, or is it just the two knobs in front? I ask this because rarely when coming to a stop after kinda getting on it it dies and takes a second to start back up. Also more when I first got it, it smelled like gas, but not so much anymore. What can this be?

Thanks again Mel, you've been great.

God bless,

Anthony B.

Hey Mel,

Thanks for all your help this far, you've been great.

I don't have any manuals for anything because I purchased the car like this, it had all this stuff already on it.

I have confirmed the following so far;

Carb: edelbrock 1407 750cfm 4BBL
Air cleaner: edelbrock Pro Flo
Block: xs casting 350ci
Heads: 47 casting small valve heads
Head bolts: ARP
Header: aftermarket for sure, not sure on brand, seems really good quality
Exhaust: full dual exhaust with flow master mufflers
Ignition: MSD 6A Ignition with blaster coil
Spark plugs: MSD
Distributor: MSD Billet
Cam: unknown
Internals of engine: unknown
Transmission: unknown, was told th400 still have to check pan
Gears: unknown, was told 373
Read diff: LSD 10 bolt
Rear shocks: new KYB Gas-a-shocks with Polly bushings
Springs: stock
Wheels: old crager s/s
Gauges: water temp, oil pressure, and voltage

So far I changed oil, oil filter, header gaskets, collector gaskets all copper, spark plugs, alt belt, other belt, tires, and when I took the old oil filter off it was written on with black sharply saying "30W break in oil". Makes me curios on internals.

I don't know if I can ask this but if it's ok what kind of hp can I look forward to making with the current parts on the car if tuned right? I just want to know what I'm working with and what kind of direction I can go with the car without doing major things like changing the engine.

Thanks Mel,

God bless,

Anthony B.

Not knowing the cam or what if anything has been changed, guess would be low 300 gross HP
