Good Afternoon,

I just replaced the ignition tumbler in my Aztek. Car was running and starting fine, this is not the "key got stuck in my ignition" issue. Now car will turn everything on, but car won't crank and start. The reason I replaced ignition tumbler is the key broke in the original. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Did you disconnect the battery before changing the tumbler? if not you may have shorted something, did you check all fuses. If you did disconnect the battery go back over any electical connections you disassembled to see if you have a bad connection.

Let me get something clear are you saying nothing happens when you turn the key or it does turn over but wont ignite? If it wont ignite, do you have a security light on?

being a new key did you program it in?? It might turn the key but not start it with out being programed in??

Radio turns on and I do get the security light. How do you program the new key? I didn't realize the keys had a chip. Or is it the cylinder that the Pass III system is looking at?

The keys on our 05 have a chip. Seems to me you have to have a working key to turn it on, than off, then with in 10 sec.s, install a new key and turn it on. Other wise you may have to find a locksmith or stealership with a programer?? Might be cheeper to find a way to remove the broken key some how? Good luck.

I already removed the tumbler. It actually fell apart when I popped it out. I caught the keys on my pants and broke it off. It must have damaged the tumbler in the process. The metal plate holding in the springs fell off when I pulled the tumbler and the springs came out.

Can you get the broken key out? And do you have another key from before you broke that one off that worked?

This Might be a long shot? But can you remove all the tumbler pins from the tumbler? As if it did not need a key cut to fit? if so and the good old key works in the tumbler? try the new key and see if it will turn it? than can you put the old tumbler back in and start the car? if so turn the car on than off and with in 5 seconds try the new key? if that worked you have programed the new key and can replace the old tumbler??? I hope this works for you. Other wise it might take a locksmith or a stealership.

Thank you melsg5. You provided the answer. It helps when you read the owners manual before taking on this task. Thank you for the help. I broke the key rushing to get to the Hospital when my Father was brought in (he passed away). Needless to say this month has sucked! I have contacted a local locksmith who is versed in fixing these issues. Thanks again for all the help!

My condolences, lost mine 3 years ago as of yesterday.

So I had the locksmith out and issue was fixed. Now today I start the car, forget my phone, shut off the car and when I return the key won't turn at all. What's weird is the steering wheel isn't locking. I have to tell you I am so damn frustrated with this ignition crap.

are you going to get the locksmith back to look at it?
