Hi all...
I am the original owner on a 2000 Grand Am GT coupe, she only have 84,000 miles but it seems like every 3-4 months something is going wrong. The current problem is that sometimes she turns over on the first try and other times it may take 2-3 times, or even 1/2 dozen... I had the battery, starter, and alternator checked from someone from Auto zone (if that really counts?) and all looked fine. I had the ignition switch replaced about 6-8 months ago, what are the chances that the switch is going bad again?

I assume you mean the engine cranks but wont start. Has anybody checked the coil packs and their mounts? Do you have a check engine light? When the car doesnt start, does the security light come on?
 
When it doesn't turn on the engine doesn't crank. however their are lights on in the dash but i don't remember which ones? i'll need to pay more attention next time i'm in the car.
 
it's not impossible to be a bad switch again but also could be the starter or starter relay

Were back to not a single issue with the car starting up... it started the last 5-6 times without a hitch? Now without taking it to a shop, is their a way i can diagnose? thx Joe
 
You can only do a true diagnosis when the car wont start. You would have to check whether you are getting current to the starter solenoid and work your way back. You did tighten both battery cables at the battery and also at their other ends?
 
Car in the shop today and i'm told i need a whole new ignition cylinder, apparently any key will now start my car... I was quoted a price of $400 which i thought was really high... any thoughts.
 
what was the breakdown between parts and labor and what is the hourly rate of the shop? The list price for a GM cylinder is $225, so $175 labor for a shop thats gets close to $100/hour would be correct.

Not sure of the breakdown. The shop that i took the car to said they needed to buy it from the dealer and they would install it. Can't i just buy one from the salvage yard with a key, pop the old one out and put he new one in?
 
how is that new key going to open your doors? how are you going to program your computer to recognize the new key?
 
Well i suppose i can keep both keys on my key ring, i also have an alarm and can't remember the last time i used the key.
As for programming the new key, no fricken idea how to do this... thought it was as easy as taking the old one out and putting the new one in... can the average person complete this task or does it need to be done at a dealer?
 
Programming a new key to the PassLock is a dealer only think if I'm not mistaken.

Below is the procedure, if it is not working...than there is a deeper problem and you need to use a factory level scan tool to pull any possible security codes. Also, you usually need to do this a few times to get it right.
30 MINUTE LEARN PROCEDURE

TOOLS REQUIRED
None
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds .
Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes (the vehicle is now ready to relearn the PASSLOCK Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK). IMPORTANT: The vehicle learns the PASSLOCK Sensor Data Code and/or password XXXXX the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
Start the engine (the vehicle has now learned the PASSLOCK Sensor Data Code and/or password).
With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed (history DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles).

We are having the same problem. Cranks but will not start! I have been told that there must be constant pressure in the fuel system. You might have a faulty check valve in the fuel system. I can never get this problem to happen when the car is at the dealer.
