New to Me 94

If you're low on fluid, the fan may come on late as the sensor may not be submerged. Check fluid level in the over flow and the radiator. As for the stalling, check the battery and alternator, verify you're putting out between 13.5-14.5 VDC while running and about 12 off of the battery when the engine's off.

Fluid levels ok,Alt is new and system is charging@14 volts. Battery is 2 yrs. old and passes a load test. I may replace the fan relay just because I suspect it could be faulty.I am also going to replace the thermostat.

Have you checked the fuel pressure?

There is a plastic housing on the drivers side of the engine. I assumed this was the thermostat housing. Removede it and there was NO thermostat ! Is this the right location or is the thermostat locsted elsewhere? It was a real B!!ch to get to.

OK!, I'll admit I'm out of my mechanical element here...I'm not at all familiar with these FWD CARS. The housing that I thought was the thermostat housing has "thermostat located at water pump" printed on it. Where is the water pump located? I really need to get this fixed and I'm out of money and time...Please someone?

If it's a quad, the water pump is on the pass side on the back low on the motor. It's driven by the timing chain. Look for the radiator hose going to it.

Well lets continue the "saga"...got the upper water outlet back on and refilled the cooling system. Let it run and got it "burped". Car runs good now that all the air is purged from the cooling system. Don't really know why this would affect the cutting out but it has not failed to stay running and does not stumble or quit now.

Both times it quit running was right after I made a sharp (90 degree ) right turn. Both turns at low, parking lot, speeds. I know there are 2 strainers on the fuel pickup. Perhaps there is some trash in the tank and it's getting stired up and temporarily blocks the pickup and then settles back down.I also put a can of "dri-gas" in the tank thinking there may have been some water in the tank as the car had been sitting for about a month or more with little or no gas in the tank.

Any thoughts or inpit?

Regards

Well, if it's running ok at the moment, I'd drive it and see what happens over the next week or so. If it acts up again, then I'd look into the possibility of trash in the fuel tank, but the only way to do it is drop the tank, so I'd eliminate all other possible causes first.

Well it seems to be running like a Swiss watch. I think it had a bit of water in the tank. I put a pint of dri-gas and a pint of SeaFoam in the tank and they seem to have done the trick. I drove it to work today and will do it again tomorrow. If it runs well I guess I'll give it my blessing and turn it loose to my wife.

Well so far so good. I don't think the gas guage is working but that will have to wait for now,and I'll have to fix the horn before it can be state inspected. Just a few odds and loose ends to clean up. I'll change the oil and filter tomorrow and the trans fluid and filter as well. Hopefully all is well and she'll be able to drive it daily to and from work.

Hope everyone had a great Turkey Day...I'm still full. lol

Regards

Well...I took my wife to work this am, about 10 miles 1 way, on the way back stopped to get oil and filter for the car. Was in the store for about 15 min. came out and started to leave...car stumbbled and almost quit. Shifted to neutral and reved it up a bit. After that it ran great. I am at a loss at this point. New fuel filter,dri-gas in tank. Fuel pressure within specs. I'm thinkin a fuel pump going bad??? Thoughts please.

The stumble only happens intermintintly, would'nt it be doing it always if any of the afore mentioned controls or dirty components were bad or in need of service? Would there be a code? There are no codes showing.

Any of those components could be dirty enough so that the car is trying to adjust itself to a false signal. Depending on driving conditions, this should be done between 50-100 thousand miles anyway, but most people don't and then sell the car off thinking it's tired. Since it woke up on the revving of the engine, I'd lean towards the MAF, but I look at it like a clutch and throw out bearing, if you're doing one, do them all.

A dying fuel pump would be more apt to show on a heavy acceleration, more often , they just die. I wouldn't runle it out, I'd just put it further down my list.

Whenever trouble shooting, start with the basics. If the system is in need of maintenance items, get them out of the way first, then see what problems are left. Unlike carburetors, EFI is a little more efficient, but more sensitive to maintenance needs. Anytime efficiency is increased on any mechanical system, the maintenance need is increased. The newer direct injection systems are more efficient and powerful than anything we've seen in an internal combustion engine, but I'm betting they're going to be a real pain in the butt in about 60-70 thousand miles.

Well I give up...Car crapped out again and will not start. Had it towed to my go to mechanic's shop. At this point I give up and will defer to the professional...
