no power in forward gears

hey everyone. i just picked up an 02 sunfire and the car honestly has me stumped. the car was throwing a code for the map and upstream o2 sensor and i fixed that. it runs great, and will drive fine in reverse but when you put it in first gear its like your starting the car in 5th gear and will either stall or have no power. the only code that will come up at times is the secondary o2 sensor but right now it doesnt have a cat on it so it could be from that. i've replaced the icm and the coils and that didnt change anything. also the car is a manual trans and all the gears are there. its getting very cold here in upstate ny so i need to get this done asap so i have a car so hopefully someone here can help. thank you
 
first thing i would do is go over the vacuum lines with a fine tooth comb . the only other thing that immediately pops into my head is torque converter ?
 
If you reread the post the car is a manual transmission. Any noise from the rear brakes when you are attempting to go forward?
 
yes the car is a manual trans. all the tires are free moving. i did notice today that the car struggles to run once i let off the clutch. the rpms will go up and down and even if i hit the gas it wont go.

but you still have no problem in reverse? There are no codes other than for the secondary oxygen sensor?
 
yeah there's no codes. i might have narrowed it down to the intake manifold. now the car runs pretty bad but if i push down on the manifold it runs better.
 
Either check the vacuum reading at idle, low vacuum means an exhaust restriction, or disconnect the catalytic converter and see if the problem goes away.

i havent checked the fuel pressure yet but it might be the intake manifold. once the car warms up it will not stay running unless i push down on the manifold.
 
already replaced the gaskets and i'll check the torque on them again tomorrow
